MTP®/MPO to LC Harness

Pre-Terminated MTP®/MPO to LC Fanout Harness for Cassettes, Racks and Backbone Links

An MTP®/MPO harness breaks one multi-fiber MPO connector out into individual LC connectors, so a parallel-optic trunk can connect to duplex equipment ports, patch panels or cassette modules. EXW builds three harness constructions: 0.9 mm fibers for use inside cassette modules, 2.0 mm round-cable legs for patching from the trunk to the rack, and multi-fiber trunk harnesses for backbone runs. Polarity is specified at order (Type A, B or C), and every harness is factory-terminated and tested before shipment.

Specifications
  • MTP®/MPO connector: 8, 12, 16, 24 or 32 fibers.
  • Other end: LC connectors, simplex or duplex.
  • Three constructions: 0.9 mm fibers for cassette modules, 2.0 mm round-cable legs for patching, and multi-fiber trunk harnesses for backbone runs.
  • Fiber types: OM3, OM4 and OM5 bend-insensitive multimode (BIMMF), and OS2 G.657.A single mode.
  • Polarity: Type A, Type B, Type C, or customized, as defined in ANSI/TIA-568.3-E.
  • MTP®/MPO connector options: US Conec MTP® or MPO-compatible; male (with pins) or female (unpinned).
  • Performance grades: Standard Loss and Low Loss; see the insertion loss and return loss tables.
  • Breakout leg length, overall length and pulling eye (trunk harness) available on request.
Mechanical Characteristics
  • Reliable high-density interconnection for: transitions from MTP®/MPO trunk cabling to duplex equipment ports, patch panels and cassette modules in data center main, horizontal and zone distribution areas; telecommunications networks and broadband/CATV networks.
Note
  • Fiber Compatibility: OM3, OM4, OM5 (BIMMF) and OS2 G.657.A

Which Harness Construction Do You Need?

All three harness constructions break an MTP®/MPO connector out into LC connectors. They differ in the cable on the breakout side and where the harness is installed.

ConstructionBreakout sideTypical installation
Cassette harness0.9 mm fibers to simplex LC connectorsInside plug-and-play fiber cassette modules
Patch harness2.0 mm round-cable legs to simplex or duplex LC connectorsFrom the trunk to the rack or equipment
Trunk harnessMulti-fiber cable fanned out at one end; pulling eye on requestBackbone runs with MPO at one end and LC at the other

Connecting to a parallel transceiver? ANSI/TIA-568.3-E Annex C describes using unpinned (female) MPO connectors on the cords that plug into equipment, because currently known parallel transceiver receptacles are pinned. Specify the connector gender at order.

MTP®/MPO Insertion Loss and Return Loss Grades

Maximum insertion loss per MTP®/MPO connector mating, with the minimum return loss for each grade.

Grade / Fiber TypeStandard LossLow Loss
Insertion loss — BIMMF OM3 / OM4 / OM5 (Multimode)≤ 0.50 dB≤ 0.35 dB
Insertion loss — SM OS2 G.657.A (Single-mode)≤ 0.75 dB≤ 0.35 dB
Return loss — BIMMF OM3 / OM4 / OM5 (Multimode)≥ 20 dB≥ 20 dB
Return loss — SM OS2 G.657.A (Single-mode)≥ 60 dB≥ 60 dB

LC Insertion Loss and Return Loss Grades

For the LC connectors on the breakout side of the harness.

Grade / Fiber TypeStandard LossLow Loss
Insertion loss — BIMMF OM3 / OM4 / OM5 (Multimode)≤ 0.30 dB≤ 0.15 dB
Insertion loss — SM OS2 G.657.A (Single-mode)≤ 0.20 dB≤ 0.15 dB
Return loss — BIMMF OM3 / OM4 / OM5 (Multimode)≥ 35 dB≥ 35 dB
Return loss — SM OS2 G.657.A (Single-mode)≥ 55 dB≥ 55 dB

These are EXW product grades. ANSI/TIA-568.3-E Annex A sets a maximum of 0.75 dB insertion loss per mated connector pair, applying the same limit to MPO array connectors and single-fiber connectors.

How to Order an MTP®/MPO to LC Harness

Each harness is built to order. Specify the following when requesting a quotation so the assembly arrives ready to install without field adaptation.
