Fiber Optic Pigtail and Patch Cord
Single-Ended Pigtails for Fusion Splicing and Simplex / Duplex Patch Cords in LC, SC, FC and ST
A fiber optic pigtail has a connector on one end and 0.9 mm buffered fiber on the other, ready to be fusion-spliced to incoming cable inside a patch panel, splice tray or wall-mount box. A patch cord has connectors on both ends and links equipment, patch panels and cassettes. EXW builds both with LC, SC, FC or ST connectors, in simplex, duplex zip-cord or duplex round cable, single-mode or multimode, and every assembly is factory-terminated and tested before shipment.
Specifications
- Pigtail: 0.9 mm buffered fiber with a connector on one end, for fusion splicing.
- Simplex patch cord: 2.0 or 3.0 mm cable.
- Duplex patch cord: zip-cord cable (3.7, 4.2 or 6.0 mm) or round cable.
- Connectors: LC, SC, FC and ST, intermateable per TIA/EIA-604; a different connector can be fitted on each end.
- LC styles: Short Boot, Uniboot, Switchable, Extractor and LED.
- Fiber types: single-mode G.657.A1 / A2; multimode OM1 / OM2, OM3, OM4 and OM5.
- Polish: UPC, UPC Low Loss or APC for single-mode (no APC for ST); UPC or UPC Low Loss for multimode.
- Cable jacket: LSFRZH or PVC. Other jacket types available on request.
Mechanical Characteristics
- Fusion splicing in fiber patch panels, splice trays and wall-mount boxes; interconnect and cross-connect in entrance facilities, telecommunications rooms and data centers; connections from patch panels to switches, servers and other network equipment.
Note
- Fiber Compatibility: OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, OM5 and single-mode G.657.A1 / A2
Pigtail or Patch Cord?
All are built from the same connectors and fiber types. They differ in how many ends are terminated and in the cable.
| Type | Ends | Cable | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pigtail | Connector on one end, fiber on the other | 0.9 mm | Fusion spliced inside patch panels, splice trays and wall-mount boxes |
| Simplex patch cord | Connectors on both ends, one fiber | 2.0 or 3.0 mm | Single-fiber connections |
| Duplex zip-cord patch cord | Connectors on both ends, two fibers | 3.7 mm (1.8 × 2), 4.2 mm (2.0 × 2) or 6.0 mm (3.0 × 2) | Transmit / receive pairs to equipment and patch panels |
| Duplex round-cable patch cord | Connectors on both ends, two fibers in one round cable | Round cable | Duplex links with a single round cable, such as LC Uniboot cords |
Connector Types
| Connector | Intermateability standard |
|---|---|
| LC (Short Boot, Uniboot, Switchable, Extractor, LED) | TIA/EIA-604-10 |
| SC | TIA/EIA-604-3 |
| FC | TIA/EIA-604-4 |
| ST | TIA/EIA-604-2 |
Insertion Loss and Return Loss
Maximum insertion loss and minimum return loss per mated connector pair.
| Fiber / Polish | Insertion Loss | Return Loss |
|---|---|---|
| Single-mode UPC | ≤ 0.20 dB | ≥ 55 dB |
| Single-mode UPC Low Loss | ≤ 0.15 dB | ≥ 55 dB |
| Single-mode APC (not available for ST) | ≤ 0.20 dB | ≥ 60 dB |
| Multimode UPC | ≤ 0.30 dB | ≥ 35 dB |
| Multimode UPC Low Loss | ≤ 0.15 dB | ≥ 35 dB |
These are EXW product grades. ANSI/TIA-568.3-E Annex A sets a maximum of 0.75 dB insertion loss per mated connector pair.
